PYP at International Maarif Schools Erbil
Understanding the IB PYP System
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an internationally acclaimed educational framework designed to nurture and develop young learners aged 3–12 into active, caring, and lifelong learners. The IB PYP prioritizes inquiry-based learning, fostering curiosity and the ability to think critically and independently. It emphasizes the holistic development of children as inquirers, not only within the classroom but also in the world beyond.
The PYP framework revolves around six transdisciplinary themes:
Who We Are
Where We Are in Place and Time
How We Express Ourselves
How the World Works
How We Organize Ourselves
Sharing the Planet
Each theme is explored through a student-centered approach, where learning is inquiry-based, action-driven, and connected to real-life contexts. Unlike traditional systems, the PYP is not teacher-centered; instead, teachers act as facilitators, guiding students to take ownership of their learning.
Implementation of the IB PYP at International Maarif School Erbil (IMSE)
At International Maarif Schools Erbil, we proudly adopt and implement the IB PYP framework to deliver a world-class education that prepares our students for the challenges of the 21st century. Below are the key aspects of our approach:
Curriculum and Resources
Our curriculum aligns with the IB PYP framework, ensuring students explore the six transdisciplinary themes over the course of the academic year. Each theme is delivered over a six-week period, resulting in six units of inquiry throughout the school year.
We integrate English, Mathematics, Science, and single subjects such as Art, Music, and Physical Education into the units of inquiry.
Teaching and Learning
Our approach is student-centered, with a focus on hands-on activities, research, and action. Students are encouraged to inquire, investigate, and take responsibility for their learning, with teachers serving as facilitators and guides.
Students engage in creating posters, conducting experiments, participating in exhibitions, and taking part in quizzes, which help reinforce their learning.
Assessment Practices
We employ both formative and summative assessments to evaluate student progress.
Formative assessments are conducted continuously during the learning process to monitor understanding and provide timely feedback.
Summative assessments occur at the end of each unit to evaluate students’ knowledge, skills, and conceptual understanding.
Events and Community Involvement
We regularly organize educational events that enhance student learning and engage parents. These include winter, spring, and summer assemblies, which showcase students’ talents and achievements.
Parents play an active role in their child’s education through participation in events, exhibitions, and regular parent-teacher meetings. These meetings provide an opportunity to discuss student progress and collaborate on strategies for further improvement.
